What are the advantages of shortcut nitrification denitrification compared to traditional denitrification processes?

Author:

Short-cut nitrification and denitrification technology can be widely applied in urban sewage treatment plants, industrial wastewater treatment plants, agricultural non-point source pollution control, and other fields. By applying short-cut nitrification and denitrification technology, nitrogen pollutants in water can be effectively removed and water quality can be improved.

Compared with traditional nitrogen removal processes, short-cut nitrification-denitrification has the following advantages:

Saving oxygen supply: Short-cut nitrification-denitrification biological nitrogen removal saves about 25% of oxygen consumption compared to traditional nitrification-denitrification biological nitrogen removal.
Reduced energy consumption: Due to the reduction of the process of oxidizing NO2--N to NO3--N by short-term nitrification-denitrification, the reaction process is shortened, thereby reducing energy consumption.
Saving carbon source for denitrification: Short-cut nitrification-denitrification only requires 60% of the organic carbon source required for traditional nitrification-denitrification, saving 40% of the carbon source.
Improved nitrogen removal efficiency: Due to the elimination of the conversion process from NO3--N to NO2--N, the denitrification carbon source is no longer preferentially utilized by nitrate-reducing bacteria, and there is no competitive inhibition of nitrite reductase by nitrate reductase, thereby accelerating nitrogen removal efficiency.
Reducing sludge production: Short-cut nitrification-denitrification can reduce the process of oxidizing NO2--N to NO3--N, thereby reducing sludge production by up to 50%.
Shortening the reaction time: Due to the shortening of the reaction process, the reactor volume is also reduced accordingly, thereby shortening the reaction time.
